The main Chinese-taught route also requires HSK Writing 60+ and English-language evidence, without a published English score minimum. Medicine and dentistry specify HSK 5 at 200+.

  • Engineering: Duolingo 120
  • Civil Engineering and GIFT: TOEFL Essentials 10
  • MBBS: Cambridge C1 Advanced 170 or Duolingo 110
  • Approved exemptions based on prior study or qualifying English results

TOEFL 90 uses the 0–120 scale. Engineering accepts 4.5/6 for tests taken from 21 January 2026. MBBS also requires IELTS 5.0 in every band or TOEFL 15 in every section.

Submit your application

Submit through Study@SJTU, Common App for the English Engineering Cluster, or the School of Medicine portal for medicine/dentistry. Select your programme and intake, upload documents and meet its deadline.

Your motivation and preparation

Explain your subject choice, preparation and motivation. Chinese-taught and MBBS applicants sign the statement; MBBS uses English. Follow your programme’s format and length.

CV

Your required subject tests

Prepare a clear CV of your education, projects, activities and achievements for Civil Engineering or GIFT. Other programmes follow their own document checklist.

Recommendation letters

Programme-specific referees

Engineering Cluster/Civil Engineering: school counsellor and core-subject teacher. Chinese-taught/MBBS: two signed letters, including a high-school teacher. Follow GIFT’s own checklist.

All other required documents

  • CSCA score report

    Prepare your programme’s papers. MBBS needs results with the application; most other routes permit them after pre-admission, by their published deadline.

  • Passport and nationality documents

    Passport, parents’ nationality evidence and any required birth, residence or nationality-history records. Engineering requires over 12 months’ passport validity; Chinese-taught and MBBS applications require over six months.

  • High-school completion and transcripts

    Graduation certificate or expected-graduation letter, plus transcripts for all completed high-school courses. Obtain your final diploma before enrolment.

  • Examination and language results

    Your qualification results and the HSK or English evidence required for your programme. The main Chinese-taught route also asks for English-language evidence.

  • School profile

    Chinese-taught and medical applications require a school-issued profile explaining the curriculum, grading system, school entry requirements and graduates’ university destinations.

  • Financial guarantee

    A bank deposit certificate showing at least RMB 100,000 or the equivalent in another currency.

  • Guardian guarantee

    If you will be under 18 on 1 September of the entry year, provide a guarantee from an eligible adult guardian in China.

  • Portfolio or study-gap explanation

    Visual Communication and Human Habitat Design require a portfolio. Engineering applicants graduating outside May–June must explain the period before entry, including any university study.

  • Medical application documents

    School of Medicine applicants also need a public-hospital physical examination issued within six months and a non-criminal-record certificate for their principal residence during the past four years.

Documents outside Chinese or English need notarised translations for Chinese-taught and medical applications. Engineering requires English documents or certified English translations. Bring originals to registration.
