Explore NYUSH’s story and strengths

A university created between two systems

Founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University, NYU Shanghai is China’s first Sino-American joint research university and one of NYU’s three degree-granting campuses. It awards an NYU bachelor’s degree and a Chinese-accredited NYU Shanghai diploma.

Broad foundations, focused study

The liberal arts and sciences core sits alongside 19 major options. Computing, data science, mathematics, business and economics join engineering, laboratory sciences, humanities and creative media. International students also develop Mandarin proficiency.

A modern campus in Pudong

The New Bund campus is in Qiantan, with teaching, research, arts and sport in a connected academic complex. NYU Shanghai has no separate QS World University Rankings listing; NYU’s overall ranking should not be read as a Shanghai-specific rank.

CSS Profile

Applicants seeking institutional aid

Gather household income and assets early, including both parental households where required or waiver evidence. Request aid before admission; a missed application does not trigger later reassessment.

All other required documents
  • School report and transcript

Arrange the School Report and transcript through your counselor or school representative; complete STARS when invited.

  • English proficiency evidence

Submit the required test results unless you qualify for NYU’s language exemption. Follow the accepted-test and score-reporting rules in the current NYU policy.

  • Academic test results, if submitted

NYU’s current policy is test optional. Optional SAT, ACT, AP, IB or approved national-exam evidence follows its testing rules; school graduation requirements still apply.

  • Mid-year, college and final records

Provide a mid-year report if grades are available, plus records of college work absent from your school transcript. Enrolling students must send official final records and graduation evidence by their stated deadline.

  • Nationality and identity evidence

Use your legal passport name and retain a valid foreign passport. Applicants with Chinese nationality history or Chinese parents need the additional citizenship and residence evidence required for international eligibility.

  • Application and fee waiver, if needed

Complete the NYU’s official application and university questions. Request the published application-fee waiver if paying the USD 85 fee is not possible.

NYU accepts official or unofficial records for application review; enrolling students must provide official records. Include an official English translation from your school or an accredited agency for other languages. Mandarin Chinese records submitted to NYU Shanghai are excepted.

11/ 11Student life

A global campus. A city to discover.

Painted AI interpretation of Shanghai’s Huangpu waterfront and skyline
Beyond the campus gates

Shanghai after class

Shanghai gives you a modern Pudong base and a much wider city to explore: riverfront paths, museums, neighbourhood cafés and arts venues. Mandarin study helps turn those outings into conversations, alongside your English-language classes.

Life on campus

The connected New Bund complex brings seminars, laboratories, library study and creative work into one urban campus. Its courtyard, arts spaces and athletics centre give you places to meet friends between classes.

Around your neighbourhood

Study in Qiantan and return to Jingyao in Houtan. The residence area has nearby food courts and shops, while the university shuttle makes the campus journey part of an ordinary weekday.

Weekends in Shanghai

Head across the river for museums, historic streets, exhibitions and food neighbourhoods. Riverside walks and the Bund offer a different pace from campus; use the metro to explore beyond Pudong.
