About Nanjing University

Overview

Nanjing University is a comprehensive public research university and a member of China's C9 League. Its international undergraduate catalogue covers languages, humanities, social sciences, business, science, computing, electronics, architecture, environmental studies and engineering.

All programmes in the current international undergraduate catalogue are taught in Chinese. NJU is best suited to students who want a rigorous, research-focused education and are ready to study alongside Chinese-speaking classmates.

Chinese language

HSK Level 5 with 180+

Most applicants need HSK 5 with at least 180 overall and at least 60 in each component. Chinese Language applicants need HSK 4 with at least 180. Applicants who completed 12 years of Chinese-medium education in Malaysia or Singapore may be exempt from submitting HSK.

English language

No general IELTS or TOEFL requirement

NJU's current international undergraduate catalogue is taught in Chinese. Only applicants to the English major have an additional published requirement: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 70.

Important for planning Meeting the minimum HSK score makes you eligible to apply, but it does not necessarily mean you are ready to complete an entire degree in Chinese.

CSCA is required for all international undergraduate applicants to NJU. Applicants must submit a valid score report.

    Check the school, tuition and exact CSCA subject combination for each choice.

    Complete HSK and CSCA

    Take the required HSK level and complete the correct CSCA papers in Chinese before the score deadline.

    Prepare your documents

    Prepare your passport, graduation or expected-graduation certificate, complete transcripts, personal statement, recommendation letters and test results.

    Apply online

    Complete the NJU international student application, upload the required evidence, and submit it for initial review.

    Pay after initial review

    If your application passes the initial review, pay the non-refundable RMB 500 application fee.

    Complete faculty review

    The relevant school reviews your application and may arrange a written test or interview.

    Visa and registration

    Use the formal admission documents to prepare your visa, insurance, housing, arrival, and university registration.

Explain why you chose the programme, why NJU is the right fit for your academic goals, and how your previous studies have prepared you.

021–2 teacher recommendation letters

The letters must be written in Chinese or English by high-school teachers. Choose teachers who can give specific examples of your academic performance, motivation and potential.

03Academic record and test results

Prepare your full high-school transcript, graduation or expected-graduation certificate, CSCA score report, HSK result and any relevant national or international examination results.

International student dormitories

Xianlin Building 21 lists a bed in a double room at RMB 3,000 per semester. Gulou's Xiyuan building lists RMB 52 per day for a double-room bed or RMB 67 per day for a single room.

Off-campus option

Private rental in Nanjing

NJU's guidance estimates private rent at roughly RMB 2,500–5,000 per month depending on location and apartment type.

Deposit, contract, utilities, commute to Gulou or Xianlin, and local temporary-residence registration

Dormitory places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Prepare an off-campus backup until your booking is confirmed.

Life in Nanjing

Student life

Nanjing combines a large student community, extensive public transport and easy access to historic and cultural sites. Your daily routine will differ depending on whether your programme is based at Gulou or Xianlin.

Gulou and Xianlin campuses

Gulou offers a historic central-city setting, while Xianlin is a larger modern campus in a major university district. Check your programme location before choosing accommodation.

City life

Nanjing has a large student population, an extensive metro network and easy access to museums, parks, historic sites and local food areas.

Chinese immersion

Because all listed programmes are taught in Chinese, you will use the language in lectures, group work, university administration, student activities and everyday life.
