01/ 11Overview

A remarkable place to begin.

Founded in 1897 as Qiushi Academy. A comprehensive C9 research university rooted in Hangzhou, with undergraduate study also extending to Haining, Yiwu and Zhoushan.

Explore ZJU’s story and strengths

History & identity

ZJU's roots lie in Qiushi Academy, founded in 1897. Its modern breadth grew from the 1998 merger of four universities in Hangzhou, bringing engineering, medicine, agriculture and a wide range of other disciplines into one institution.

Academic strengths

Engineering and computing sit alongside established strengths in medicine, agriculture and the life sciences. ZJU suits students who want a research-intensive setting and the chance to connect technical ideas with real problems in health, food, energy or business.

  • Strength across disciplines

Study computing, engineering, medicine or agriculture in a broad research university.

  • Distinct international programmes

Explore biomedical dual degrees with Edinburgh in Haining, or English-taught medicine in Yiwu.

  • Hangzhou beyond the classroom

Enjoy lakes, tea-growing hills and a lively technology economy alongside university life.

10/ 11Accommodation

Find your Hangzhou base.

On campus

International student dormitories

A convenient base for classes and campus life, subject to a successful room reservation.

Booking requiredLocations & practical details
Locations
Zijingang, Yuquan and Huajiachi in Hangzhou; Haining and Zhoushan manage their own rooms. Yiwu students follow the medical school's arrangements.
Best for
A straightforward first-year routine with fewer commuting and rental-contract decisions.
Plan for
Follow the booking notice for your campus. Published Hangzhou rates may be per room, not per person; utilities and bedding are extra for long stays.
Off campus

Private rental near your campus

More independence and room choice, with responsibility for the contract and daily commute.

University consent requiredLocations & practical details
Locations
Choose a neighbourhood near your teaching campus in Hangzhou, Haining, Yiwu or Zhoushan; these are separate cities.
Best for
Students without a dorm booking, or those wanting more privacy and flexibility.
Plan for
Obtain university consent before moving off campus. Budget for deposit and utilities, check the lease and register your address with local police within 24 hours of moving in.

Have a housing backup. A room is not arranged if your online reservation is unsuccessful. Prepare a private-rental backup near the right campus before travelling.

11/ 11Student life

A campus to call home. A city to discover.

AI city illustration inspired by West Lake in Hangzhou
Beyond the campus gates

Hangzhou after class

In Hangzhou, weekends can mean West Lake walks, tea-growing hills and neighbourhood cafes. Haining and Yiwu offer their own smaller-city routines, so choose your social and travel plans around the campus where you will actually study.

Campus routine

Use dining halls, libraries and student activities to build a routine close to class. On a large campus, a bicycle can make the trip between buildings easier.

Your campus matters

Zijingang and Yuquan are in Hangzhou; ZJU-UoE and GCM are in Haining, while English MBBS and Biomedical Engineering are in Yiwu. They offer different daily experiences.

Weekends in Zhejiang

Explore Hangzhou's lakeside paths, museums and tea villages. For students elsewhere in Zhejiang, leave time and budget for the journey rather than treating Hangzhou as a local commute.

Keep exploring

More universities. More possibilities.
