About Fudan University

Overview

Fudan University is a comprehensive public research university in Shanghai and a member of China's C9 League. International applicants can choose from a broad range of Chinese-taught undergraduate programmes across humanities, social sciences, economics, management, science, engineering, and medicine.

Most undergraduate programmes are taught in Chinese. Fudan also offers a small number of English-taught undergraduate programmes with separate admissions notices and requirements.

Why choose Fudan

A leading C9 university with outstanding strengths across humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, science, and international studies.

What to watch

Admission is highly competitive. CSCA is required, and application deadlines arrive earlier than many other Chinese universities.

Best-fit student

You have excellent grades, relevant subject preparation, and the language skills needed for your chosen programme.

Not ideal for

You want a wide range of English-taught undergraduate programmes or are not ready to choose a specific programme.

Language requirements

Chinese language

Chinese-version CSCA required; HSK is optional

Applicants for Chinese-taught programmes must take the Chinese version of CSCA. HSK is not mandatory, but Fudan lists HSK Level 5 with 210+ or HSK Level 6 with 180+ if submitted. Interviews for Chinese-taught programmes also assess your ability to communicate in Chinese.

English language

IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90 / DET 110 / PTE 61

Applicants whose native language is not English must provide an accepted English language qualification: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, DET 110, or PTE 61. Students whose main high-school courses were taught in English may be exempt, subject to Fudan's review.

Important for planning For the two Chinese Language for Foreigners tracks, HSK Level 4 with 180+ can waive the CSCA Chinese for Arts Majors paper, but Mathematics is still required.

Early-August booking, prompt payment, campus location, room type, and a backup
Off-campus option

Private rental in Shanghai

Private rental is the practical backup if a dormitory is unavailable or if you want more independence in Shanghai.

Best for
Students who miss campus housing or prefer a private arrangement
Plan for
Deposit, contract, commute, utilities, and temporary-residence registration within 24 hours of moving in

Treat campus housing as limited until your reservation is confirmed. Do not arrive in Shanghai without an off-campus backup.
